Frequently asked questions

I sold my property during the year, can I benefit from a reduction of the property tax in proportion to the time of occupation?

Real estate fiscal

No. If you sell your property during the year, you cannot obtain a reduction in your property tax in proportion to the number of months during which you occupied the property.
In fact, as the owner on January 1st of the tax year, you are legally liable for the property tax for the entire year.
In practice, when signing the deed of sale, you can agree with the purchaser that he/she will reimburse you for the property tax corresponding to the months following the purchase (for the calculation you can base yourself on the property tax notice of the previous year).

In practice: Such an agreement is common but make sure it is included in the deed of sale. If the deed of sale is signed after receipt of the tax notice, the refund can be requested on the same day as the signing.

Note: Such an arrangement cannot be used against the tax authorities, who will always turn to the seller for payment of the property tax. On the other hand, you can take action against the purchaser who has not reimbursed you for his share of the property tax, as agreed in the deed of sale.
